IEEE UP Section has recently announced the formation of their Young Professionals Affinity Group as of May, 2016. The opening activity of this affinity group, titled “TECH-FOCUS”, held as a Young Professionals Student Transition and Elevation Partnership Program (STEP), was a one day national workshop on “Research Paper Writing and Publication Ethics”. A total of 90 Young Professionals from 15 different educational institutions took part in this workshop hosted by GLA University, Mathura on 24th September, 2016.
The Department of Computer Engineering & Applications, GLA University, Mathura organized this workshop and was sponsored by IEEE Asia-Pacific (R10) Young Professionals STEP, IEEE U.P. Section Young Professional Affinity Group and IEEE CS GLAU Student Branch. The workshop targeted the development of research awareness for beginners (graduate students, research scholars and young academicians/faculty). The various talks and activities were conducted by eminent dignitaries on topics such as Plagiarism, Research Paper Writing, Patent filling issues etc. The program concluded with a Young Professionals group activity along with an Open Discussion Forum, focusing on pursuing research based careers beyond graduation as well as current challenges and constraints faced by young professionals.
The event was inaugurated by the honorable Chief Guest, Dr. S.N. Singh, Professor at IIT Kanpur and IEEE R10 CTS Coordinator, along with Dr. J. Ramkumar, Chairperson of IEEE U.P. Section and Mr. Dhanukumar Pattanashetti of IEEE Bangalore Section. The event was further graced by the presence of Prof. Anand Mohan Agarwal, Pro-Vice Chancellor at GLA University; Prof. Anoop Kumar Gupta, Dean of Research and Development; Dr. Anirudh Pradhan, Head of Computer Engineering and Applications Department; Prof. Anand Singh Jalal and Prof. Dilip Kumar Sharma who lighted the lamp to initiate the workshop. The welcome speech was given by Prof. Anand Singh Jalal & the theme was introduced by Prof. Dilip Kumar Sharma. Dr. S.N. Singh, during his inaugural address, spoke about the five-point spells for good education. He mentioned that academicians should be expert in TRPIP (Teaching, Research, Publication, Institutional and Professional activities). Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. A.M. Agarwal mentioned the importance of this workshop in skill development of an individual.
Dr. Singh also gave a talk on “Effective Writing and Publishing of Research Papers”. He explained how to correctly organize the proper vocabulary, images, tables, comparative analysis and other necessary content in a research paper. He also talked about the importance of summarizing the paper’s key findings and how to chronologically cite the referral sources. Prof. J. Ramkumar, delivered an expert talk on “Effective Patent Filing and Related Issues”. He discussed the different ways patents are filed in different countries. He mentioned that a research paper can be well used for scientific identification and investigation of technical and social issues; also that an author’s initial fears of writing a paper can be overcome by proper guidance, focus and organizing. Er. Dhanukumar Pattanashetti, spoke on the topic, “IEEE Xplore Digital Library: Delivering Research Better than Ever”. He explained the needs of a digital library in today’s world where ICT based knowledge is expanding rapidly.
Later, Prof. Sheerish Chowdhury delivered a lecture on “English for Research Paper Writing”. In his lecture, he talked about how, only with correct language, can one express the thoughts and views correctly to communicate a research. He further discussed upon the relevance of language usage in research letters, articles, proposals and projects. Prof. Aniruddha Pradhan spoke on “Effective Research Proposal Writing and Related Issues”. He emphasized upon need and relevance of a research grant proposals in R & D activity. Prof. Dilip Kumar Sharma delivered a lecture on the “IEEE Plagiarism Guidelines”, explaining how plagiarism is a crime which puts up questions on the research of academicians.
Lastly, a Young Professionals group activity was conducted where the participants were divided into small teams of 5-8 participants consisting of a mixed group of faculties, scholars and students. A common team activity was assigned to all the groups; they were asked to pen down the “major challenges faced by them in pursuing research or in defining their research problem” within 10-15 minutes. Each team was then asked to present the same verbally before the hosts and were then suggested possible solutions and guidelines by the judges.
The event concluded with an open discussion forum among the participants and the presentation of mementos to the honorable guests. The Convener of the program was Dr. Dilip Kumar Sharma, Co-Convener Mr. Ashish Sharma and Young Professionals Convenor Mr. Vikrant Bhateja (SRMGPC, Lucknow). The program was managed by Deepali Pawar and Saurabh Anand. Anant Ram, Dr. Manas Mishra, NitinTyagi, Shashi Shekhar, Rakesh Galab, Deepak Mangal, Neeraj Varshney, Saurabh Srivastava, Praveen Mittal, Kailash Kumar, Rahul Pradhan & Pushp Maheshwari gave their commendable cooperation.
